Is Renting Out Your Unused Space a Safe Way to Make Money?

Homstie.com is a new site that has raised a few eyebrows with its unorthodox approach to traditional self storage. The site was recently featured on the popular blog LifeHacker and received many passionate responses.
LifeHacker readers saw it as a great idea that benefits both parties: the person who has unused space makes money, while the person in need of extra space doesn’t have to pay the high price of traditional self storage. One commenter mentioned how this would be ideal for college students and for people who need to store items that are not highly valuable. Another mentioned how it would be great in small communities where people already know each other and could use the site to keep track of where their belongings are being stored.
However, many people commented on the safety issues surrounding the Homstie concept. How can you trust someone with your belongings? Or, as one commenter mentioned, how can you be sure people are not storing anything illegal?
After reading the “safety” section on the site it’s clear that Homstie has thought about these issues, and gives users advice on how to minimize potential problems. They recommend the “landlord” get a lease agreement (which can be purchased through the site) and go over all the items the tenant will be storing. They have also have a feedback system to evaluate other users based on past storage transactions.
Of course, even with safety guidelines and a lease agreement, Homstie is new concept and is subject to some level of skepticism and uncertainty. Ultimately, if someone is looking for an easy way to make money extra money, or an affordable alternative to self storage, Homstie does provide a useful solution.
